Dred Scott was a slave who sued his owner unsuccessfully for his freedom. The case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. He said that he and his wife were slaves, but lived in a state where slavery was illegal. He lived in Wisconsin. The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 against him, saying that no African American could claim citizenship t in the USA, so he had no right to say this.Visit Wikipedia for more information.

He sued his owner because at the time he lived in a free state; so he shouldn't have even been enslaved. The jury said that he could not bring it to the supreme court because no African-American was an "American citizen".

It is too bad that a month after Dred Scott was freed he died.
