Help-Good website
So,
I found this good website that has a short timeline of all the major events during the civil war. Heres the URL:
http://www.historyplace.com/civilwar/index.html
But, it's not what I need! I need a good website that has information on Art. If you have found any good ones, please tell me!
Thanks,
Ellie (Franks design team)

women during the civil war by owen and julia
Most women would stay home and watch over the farm and children but some were able to actually be in the war either by dressing up as men and going off to fight in the war or maybe becoming a nurse and if they were really lucky then they might become spies.
Because of their husbands not being there to help support them and their family and the need for workers in factories most women would get a job to help with supporting their family but if a man had worked half the time a women did then he'd still get paid more.

public schools by owen and julia
The picture in the top left is of a family that built some of the public schools in their county.
The picture in the top right is of a old 1800 school house.
The picture to our left is of a 1800's school house and the 1 up above and the one to are left are of 1900 schools and it shows you how much they've changed. They went from a 1 room school house to ones with quite a few more rooms.
runaway slaves
Harriet Tubmin was a brave woman, she use to be a slave, but then she escaped. After she escaped she went back to her hometown and helped other slaves run away. She was a very inportant person in the underground railroad. She helped run it and many people escaped on it.
The slaves in the picture next to the text are slaves who Harriet helped ascape .She helped lots of people get away from there slave owners. Harriet is a famouse escape slave along with Fredrick Douglas,Nat Turner, Ellen and William Craft. Fredrick Douglas also helped free slaves and he too was hung.

public schools by owen and julia
many angry whites would attack the colored schools because they didnt want them to learn. This happened at all colored schools.many colored kids changed to home schooling.
From 1620 to 1840 almost all schools were either private church schools or private charity schools. Public schools made little progress until the ''social panic of the 1840's''. then the school centralizers began the fight over public schools against the republic. But the republic became distracted with the immigration of 3.5 million Irish immigrants which distracted and scared the republic enough to let the school centralizers win the fight over public schools.
Back in 1854, school out on the frontier was different from today. the kids wouldnt go to school in september. They would go in november. They did that because the kids would stay home to harvest and pick apples and pears and ect. Then when it got to november they would go to school. In class THere was kids of all colors. They would all be in one room. They would be sepperated in class by books. Then later the kids would do a report on the book and they would have to recite it to the class or to the teacher quitly. In the winter most boys would stay home to take care of the farm. The older boys would never go to school in the summer because of the farm.in class there would be kids that are 3 and 4 and there would be kids older than the teacher.
Sometimes the students were given a Reward of Merit, which showed them that they had done well. It was an honor to receive this certificate because paper and printed materials were scarce on the frontier.

Until the 1840's most schools used the bible and other religious literature but in the ''1840's concession'' it required that theological distinctions be taught at home or at church. Then they slowly started to take out the big questions of life out of school like ''where did I come from'' ''is there any purpose of life'' ''is there life after the grave''

poor hygene and living conditions
This image above is a picture of soldiers that have died on battle. These soldiers were not always healthy even though they went out to battle. Many had disease such as typhoid, measles, scurvy, small pox, and tuberculosis. A lot of the men did not know they had any disease until it was to late and they were in battle. They had no choice but to keep on fighting and that often spread the disease and made there disease so bad they died on the battle field like some of the men in this picture.
These men were very poorly fed and became so sick that they weighed just over 50 pounds. The camps were very harsh and often had trouble feeding all the men to the point where they could look like this. The men who were like this were very weak so they could barley keep them selves up. Other men could have disease where they through up so much that they lose most a lot of weight like these men could have done. They also could have a fatal disease of diarrhea where there body poops out every food that goes in them so they can not live because they can not eat.

Follow-up on Signing Posts
I just wanted to remind people to include their names and core class on the Quilting a Nation blog too. Many of the posts are anonymous.

Please, everyone!
Please, everyone! Don't forget to put your names and who's team you are on when you post. It gets confusing for everyone when you don't know who posted what. For the teachers, too -- they can't figure out who to give credit to! And also don't forget the titles.Thank you so much!

US expands 1848 (From Deborah's class)
This is a poster-advertisement for a steam ship to California to 'make your fortune.'
(all though this is from Nicaragua, we just want to state a fact about Chinese: at the beginning of the California gold rush, there are around 7 Chinese in California. The three years following, there are about 20,000 and still more arriving! Anyway...)
The California gold rush was a time of huge expanding for the us because of all he immigrants who came in and settled and because and the huge economic boom that happened in the state. We think the California gold rush is actually kind of funny in it's own way because although EVERYONE who came to California during the gold rush was there to make money. The reason this is funny is because the miners themselves rarely made any money(they often came with more than they left with) but people how made companies that sold mining picks and such (and the people that owned the land) became ridiculously rich.
One more fact: since the economic boom happened so fast, the prices for everyday things(like water) soared in price. Since the miners were (temporarily) rich, some of them didn't mind spending as much as $100 for a glass of water in a bar!!! Above: (Please exuse the mild 'jack----' langauge: you know what they mean)

Typical Civil War hospital
t
This is a picture of a typical hospital during the Civil War. Most of the time the hospitals were a table with a couple candles in a tent. Sometimes the doctors were just regular soldiers because there were so many wounded people. Half of the time the doctors did not disinfect their tools, so even more people ended up with infections.
