John Ericsson invented the first Ironclad for the Union. Her name was "Monitor". In February 25th 1862 she was shot down with a torpedo and was not recovered until December 31 1862.

Great information - you have me all interested to know more. Here are some questions that I have:
Why was the invention of an ironclad important?
How did the Ironclad help the Union? What fired the torpedo?
What was the importance of the Union's naval strength in the war?
Sorry. I believe some of my inforamtion on this is not correct. I have posted some thing called "USS Mointor" with proper facts about the first ironclad. I am truly sorry,(again).
